Our Sixth Formers found an unusual way of fundraising for charity thanks to our very own Pinball Wizard, Mr Hardy

Our Sixth Formers found an unusual way of fundraising for charity thanks to our very own Pinball Wizard, Mr Hardy. Although we all know him best for his skills as a science teacher in his spare time Mr Hardy is one of the top ten pinball machine players in the UK, and one of the organisers of Northern Lights Pinball, the country’s biggest show for pinball fanatics. The event, which takes place annually at Event City in Manchester has raised more than £22,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust in the last seven years, so when the charity arranged a talk with the Sixth Form, Mr Hardy saw it as the perfect opportunity to bring in his pinball machines and get the students to raise some money too! Ahead of the talk in the final week of last term the Sixth Form common room was transformed into a pinball arcade, with eight machines for the students to try out their skills on. Although all the machines were free to play, students were asked to make donations to the Teenage Cancer Trust in return for the chance to try them out, an initiative which raised £165. Mr Hardy said: “It was great to be able to combine the Teenage Cancer Trust’s session with some fundraising for the charity. “The talk helped the students gain a better understanding of the physical signs and symptoms of cancer, the help and support available and how young people can get involved with the Trust.” “Bringing the pinball machines in to help raise cash for the charity helped them to see how extra-curricular activities can be fun but can also be a way to help others.” Mr Hardy, who’s been one of the top players in the UK pinball league for more than a decade added: “Most of the students had never seen a pinball machine before and I think they found it quite a change from the video and computer games they’re used to playing.” “A few of them really seem to have caught the bug though, so it looks like I might have some competition!” .
