Whenever possible we look for ways to enrich and extend learning by running science related visits and activities. In November we ran a visit to the Material Engineering department at the University of Manchester to learn about careers in material science and polymers. A group of year 10 triple scientists enjoyed a lecture on the importance of new materials and careers in materials before moving to the university laboratories to carry out some investigations of their own. After testing the properties of rubbers at different temperatures they went on to test the strength of different polymers. 'It is a brilliant experience for our students to learn from people at the cutting edge of new technology and they really enjoyed learning about different careers and degree courses in this field' said Mrs Taylor who accompanied the boys. We have recently run an in class activity with a group of year 9 boys linked to the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Christmas lectures. The boys took part in a debate on communication and the ethics of devices that listen when we speak. Following the debate, the boys were able to take part in a live web chat with some scientists who work in the communications field. They asked some amazing questions and were surprised by some of the things they learned during this activity. We are currently planning our science week activities which will involve some interesting and exciting science as well as a visit to the Manchester University science fair for some of our students.
