Good career guidance helps inspire students towards further study and enables them to make informed decisions whenever choices are open to them. It helps them to understand enough about the world of work to know what skills they need to succeed. It is important for social mobility because it helps open students’ eyes to careers they may not have considered. ( )


Audenshaw School is committed to providing a planned programme of Careers Education and Guidance for all students in years 7 – 11, this is in partnership with Positive Steps. Audenshaw School endeavors to carry out its statutory duties under Section 42A of the Education Act 1997. The school is committed to providing staff with CPD training relevant to raising aspirations and developing a stronger culture for careers throughout the school. Audenshaw School will ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access all students in year 8 to year 11 for the purposes of informing them about approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships as outlined in section 42B of the Education Act 1997. The Raising Aspirations School Improvement Plan contains strategic developments of CEIAG along with details staff involved, funding requirements, monitoring and impact. This plan will be reviewed by SLT and regular updates on its implementation will be discussed fortnightly with the Principal.

Parents and Carers

The school is committed to providing parents and carers with continuous updates on careers related activities that their children take part in. Parents will be made aware of talks, trips and visits relating to their child’s future pathways through the schools communication networks. The school also provide parents with the option to contact the careers adviser directly, please see contact details above.


Every curriculum area will take the opportunities to link learning with careers, in particular the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Displays in departments will highlight the range of careers opportunities/paths linked to their subject and highlight where the core LORIC employability skills of Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication are evident within each curriculum area


The schools impartial careers adviser (Positive Steps) conducts careers interviews in a private room. The careers adviser will meet with year 10 and 11 students on a rota throughout the year on a one-to-one basis. A record of the interview and its outcomes will be emailed to students by Positive Steps following the appointment. A copy is also retained in school to assist with tailoring each student’s aspirations to any career related activities taking place and the planning of additional activities. The service is available to year 8, 9, and 10 students by appointment. Details of when Positive Steps are in school will be displayed on the careers room door.

Community and employer links 

Audenshaw School is committed to developing links with businesses in the local area and in Tameside, to provide students with inspiration and guidance on the local economy, where speakers can provide students with information, advice and guidance on the local career prospects. Employers and other external agencies will be invited in throughout the academic year (where necessary) to work with students across various year groups. Students are also encouraged to visit appropriate college and apprenticeship open events and information is displayed within the designated careers area of the school to raise their awareness of the options available to them.

Findel education in Hyde have supported our workplace visit programme, allowing small groups of our year 9 students to experience a variety of roles within their company and take part in team building activities at their site in Hyde.

We have been working in close partnership with Brother UK through our GMCA Enterprise co-coordinator to provide support for activities that contribute to all 8 Gatsby benchmarks such as; Staff training, workplace visits, encounters with employers/employees, virtual work experience opportunities, mock interviews, speed networking and student mentoring programmes. Regular meetings take place with our enterprise adviser at Brother UK to discuss our progress towards the benchmarks and plan additional collaboration to further strengthen our Raising aspiration programme.

Labour Market Information 

Providing students with continuous updates on Labour Market Information is fundamental to their career choice pathways. Working with key partners and other external agencies the school will provide students and staff with resources of factual knowledge on the local and national economy developments on education and employment opportunities. All students will have access to XELLO through their own personalised log in. XELLO is designed to provide personalised support for young people in planning their future and exploring the world of careers, training and further education.

Year 7 

Year 7 students will be given career related assemblies and will have the opportunity to listen to external speakers about interesting career choices. They will use the XELLO site during form time to begin exploring a wide range of careers options to better understand what they involve along with the skills and qualifications required.

Year 8 

Careers Education is implemented within the year 8 Life Skills curriculum (aim high and a vision for the future) and students are provided with opportunities throughout the year to develop their self-awareness and future prospects. Year 8 will be given appropriate career related talks from external speakers. Year 8 will have one timetabled lesson per week with access to ICT facilities in order to complete the PiXL Edge Apprentice level qualification, a specifically selected team of teachers will deliver this to maximise its success with achievement of the LORIC skills celebrated throughout the year during assemblies and at end of year celebrations All students will be given the opportunity to access information relating to technical qualifications and apprenticeships from a range of education and training providers. Year 8 students will have access to XELLO throughout the year.

Year 9 

During the life skills curriculum, year 8 will cover topic such as; Enterprise, CV writing, Labor markets and incomes. They will use the XELLO site during form time to explore additional career options and to help support them during the guided pathways process. Students will choose their options through the Guided Pathways programme, which will support their future outcomes post year 11 and allow the school to provide bespoke careers related activities for all students progressing on to Key Stage 4. 

Year 10 

Students will take part in careers related talks from external providers. During the summer term, all year 10 students will be involved in a week of career related activities, this involves a careers fair where they meet a wide range of local employers, CV writing and job application skill. Additional to this the school will also provide students with an opportunity to submit a ‘mock’ application form and experience a practice interview with an employer. Students will then get feedback on this process. Students will also be given the opportunity to work towards the PiXL edge Graduate level qualification with successes celebrated during assemblies and end of year celebrations.

Year 11 

Students will be provided with college and apprenticeship presentations and carry out one-to-one guidance sessions with the careers adviser. They will also be provided with application support, information on Post 16 open events and opportunities to develop their CV writing skills and a CV checking service during lunch time sessions with the careers advisor. Year 11 students will work with XELLO in the first term to help raise their aspirations and guide and support them as they apply to colleges in readiness for the next phase of their education and training.

At Audenshaw School, we are immensely proud to dedicate our time to supporting different charities.

This Year 2019-2020

Our School Council has sat down to discuss different charities and have already decided on 3 for this school year.

Sam's Gift- We will be rising money from The Chase where we see Mr. Whitehead as the Annihilator take on five of the school's brightest students. 

Future Perfect Project - We will be collecting art supplies in the lead up to Christmas to support people with art therapy in the lead up to Christmas.

Magical Moments- We have been set the challenge of raising £3000 in order to keep an activity centre open for a year in South Africa. 

Previous Years


Active Audenshaw

On the 3 July 2019 the whole school participated in Active Audenshaw a day focussed on staff and students getting outside and getting active. The day was filled with activities for all the students starting off with a form time military style warmup. The students all stood in lines and tried to synchronise squats, star jumps and high kicks.

During period 1 over 400 children signed up with staff to run a 5K around the school,  During periods 2, 3 and 4 students were invited to participate in retro sports day including an egg and spoon race, tug of war and three legged race. The hula hoop skills of some of the boys were very impressive and we were really lucky that they worked as a team in the three legged race to avoid any injuries. At lunchtime all of the prefects ran their own stall which tested students strength, skill and balance. These included the popular hoop and shoot, welly wanging and football golf. The games were 50p a game where the students donated overwhelmingly to raise additional donations for the British Heart Foundation

The Royal British Legion

The year 7s hosted a cake sale where students baked and donated a wealth of different cakes to sell.

A group of Year 9 boys designed and created poppy badges, keyrings, hair bands and Christmas decorations to sell. 

We also remembered those who fought in many wars by creating our own poppy wall in the main hall.

Tamside Food Bank 

We have yet again demonstrated our passion for charity in our winter term by collecting food hampers for local families this Christmas. We filled them each with enough food to provide those most in need in our community with a Christmas dinner along with food for the weeks to come. 


We supported Emmaus by collecting warm winter wear such as thermals for our ‘Think Warm’ campaign, we even had parents knitting warm hats, scarfs and gloves.

Save the Children

Our annual Christmas Jumper Day was yet again another success. 


In September 2017 the School Council and Prefects voted to support the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital as this year’s chosen charity. We ran the ‘Crazy for Christmas’ campaign throughout November and December.

As a school we donated hundreds of presents to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Several of our prefects went to the hospital to drop off the gifts and were fortunate to be shown around some of the wards. We also hosted our annual Christmas Jumper Day in support of the cause.

In December 2017, students across the school spent countless lunchtimes learning to master the technique of knitting. The squares they produced were donated to a local group called the Neo-Natal Knitters who distributed the blankets to local premature baby units.

We also donated over 50 shoe boxes filled with gloves, hats, dried food, and toiletries to Lifeshare Ltd, a charity that supports those who are homeless and vulnerable in the Manchester and Salford area.


Mission Macmillan

Last year Macmillan Tameside set us the challenge of raising £5000 towards their new Tameside Cancer Support Unit. We were extremely excited when our final total reached over £9090. Over the year we reached our target through several coffee mornings, our Mega Macmillan Raffle, Christmas Jumper Days, Wear Green for a £1, the one-hundred-mile challenge, bike rides, swim events, Sixth Form pinball machines, sports day obstacle course and the £10 challenge. We are so immensely proud of our students for over exceeding our original target. We were recognised by Macmillan for our charitable donations by our school name being put on a plague in the Tameside Cancer Unit.

Tameside Food Bank

During the month of December 2016 students collected tins and dried foods in order to support those most in need during the winter months. We collected over 2000 items that were donated to the food bank.
