KS5 Art & Design

Sixth Form (KS5) Art & Design

Examination Board: AQA

The AQA Fine Art A Level course at Audenshaw offers students the opportunity to investigate and explore their own ideas and to develop a very personal response.

Students will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of materials and techniques including drawing, painting, photography, textiles and new digital media. Students are taught by at least two specialist Art teachers, who focus on the need to strengthen and expand each student’s individual range of skills and experiences. Small group sizes allow for a considerable amount of personalised teaching time.

Students who have followed the AQA GCSE Fine Art course will find the style and approach familiar however, the A Level course encourages increasingly independent working and this lays the foundations for further study of Art, Design or related subjects in higher education.

The A Level courses require candidates to complete two units of study.

A Level Introduction

Students will be given an initial starting point and will be introduced to a range of different media and techniques with the intentions of building on and extending existing skills from GCSE.

Students will be required to develop their ideas and experiments from their initial starting point through into a final outcome. Students should focus on developing their ability to research and develop ideas independently and also link their work in a meaningful way to relevant critical/contextual materials in preparation for the expectations of Component 1.

A Level

Component 1 – Personal Investigation (60% of A Level) - This is a practical investigation supported by written material.

Students are required to conduct a practical investigation, into an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by written material. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student and must lead to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes.

The written material must be a coherent and logically structured extended response of between 1000 and 3000 words of continuous prose.

Students can present the written material as a single passage of continuous prose or as a series of shorter discrete, but linked, passages of continuous prose incorporated within the practical work.

Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment (40% of A Level) – This unit involves a practical response to a theme set by the exam board. Following the preparatory period, students must complete 15 hours of unaided, supervised time. In the 15 hours students must produce a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, informed by their preparatory work.

The A Level Fine Art course is ideal for students who wish to build upon the work they have completed at GCSE, enabling them to extend and improve their understanding and use of materials and techniques.

Students need to be able to generate their own ideas and to enjoy and be engaged in their work enough to extend their investigations beyond the allocated lesson times.

As part of the A Level course students will be given the opportunity to visit Art Galleries and will work with a practising artist, spending the day viewing their original work first hand and taking part in a series of workshops delivered by the artist.

On completion of the A Level course, students celebrate their success through a final exhibition of the work produced.
