Government and Politics is a popular and ideal course for students with an interest in History and local, national and international events. Our aim is to develop in students a lasting interest and an enthusiasm for Politics whilst helping them achieve the best grades they are capable of. Government and Politics obviously complements other A Level subjects such as History, English and Geography, in terms of the skills that are developed, but it is also very unique in terms of the content we study. We welcome students from any academic background.

There are three areas of study, each assessed by one exam paper taken at the end of the course in Year 13 –

Component 1: UK Politics and Core Political Ideas

Component 2: UK Government and Non-core Political Ideas

Component 3: Comparative Politics

Component 1: UK Politics and Core Political Ideas

Students will study:

UK democracy and political participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the Media. Students will also study the core political ideas of conservatism, liberalism, socialism.

Component 2: UK Government and Non-core Political Ideas

Students will study:

The constitution, parliament, Prime Minister and executive, relationships between the

Branches of government. They will also study one idea from the following: anarchism, ecologism, feminism, multiculturalism, nationalism.

Component 3: US Comparative Politics

Students will study:

The US Constitution and federalism, US Congress, US presidency, US Supreme Court and

civil rights, democracy and participation in US politics and comparative theories.
