At Key Stage 3 the French Department follows the Avance course book. In addition the school subscribes to the Linguascope website; teachers will supply the password so that students may also use these interactive activities at home.
At GCSE students have 6 lessons of French a fortnight and study the following topics in greater depth using more sophisticated language:
- School: education, school life and future plans.
- Personal and Social Life: self, family, friends, home life, and relationships.
- Hobbies and Free time: sports, free time, media, new technologies.
- Environment: Home town, local environment, pollution, recycling, local facilities, comparisons with other towns and regions.
- Work: work experience, part-time jobs, and future careers.
- Holidays: travel and holidays
- Healthy lifestyle: activities, meals and healthy living.
- Shopping: clothes, food, general facilities.
They currently prepare spoken and written controlled assessments for submission to the AQA exam board. Students will also spend time with the French Language Assistant to improve their spoken and written performance. In Year 11 students will sit listening and Reading exams at either Foundation or Higher Level.
Students may go on to study French at A Level.
Year 7 - Curriculum Information
In Year 7 students have 6 lessons of French a fortnight. Students are taught the basic skills to be able to cope with understanding a foreign language through a range of topics including personal details, the family and pets, home and environment, school life, telling the time and hobbies.
Year 8 - Curriculum Information
In Year 8 students have 4 lessons of French a fortnight in addition to their Spanish beginners lessons. Students start to learn how to use and express tenses through a variety of topics including the weather, holidays, food and drink, clothes and fashion, transport and holidays. Students also learn vocabulary and the skills to be able to hold conversations in the target language.
Year 9 - Curriculum Information
In Year 9 students choose their language option and have 6 lessons of French a fortnight. Students generally work towards a level 6 to 7 using all the skills they have gained in year 7 and 8 and preparing them for further study at GCSE. All students in year 9 will learn how to talk about their town and the environment and study hobbies and television, home life, food, keeping fit and how to lead a healthy lifestyle and holidays in greater detail.
Key Stage 3 - How parents/carers can support their child
Students have vocabulary booklets covering these topics and parents can help by checking that students are learning this vocabulary on a regular basis. Websites available to support learning are Linguascope.com and Duolingo.com.
